As the festive season begins, South Devon transforms into something truly special — twinkling lights reflected on the sea, the scent of mulled cider drifting through market stalls, and the comforting glow of log fires across the countryside.
Whether you’re staying at Three Tree Lodge or simply exploring the area, here are a few of our favourite ways to soak up the magic of Christmas in Devon this year.
1. Wander Through a Local Christmas Market
Devon’s festive markets are full of heart — artisan crafts, local food, and that unmistakable community spirit.
Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market (20 November – 19 December) is the largest and most atmospheric in the area, set within the historic Cathedral Green. With beautifully crafted gifts, local food stalls and a lively bar beneath the glow of the cathedral’s spires, it’s well worth the trip. Exeter is less than 30 minutes away by car, or easily reached by train or bus.

Closer to home, Totnes Christmas Market brings a bohemian charm. Held on the first three Tuesdays in December (2nd, 9th & 16th, from 3–9pm), these late-night events fill the streets with live music, street food and craft stalls. The final market includes the Totnes Carnival Lantern Parade — a beautiful sight that captures the true spirit of a Devon Christmas.
For something more low-key, Teignmouth Christmas Market offers handmade gifts, sea views and a relaxed coastal feel — perfect for a gentle browse followed by a stroll along the seafront.
2. See the Bay of Lights in Torquay

For a touch of seaside sparkle, take an evening trip to Torquay’s Bay of Lights — a magical light trail stretching along the seafront, with illuminated displays, music and festive cheer by the water. It’s perfect for a gentle stroll after dinner, camera in hand, and a cosy stop for hot chocolate or mulled wine along the way.
3. Join a Local Wreath-Making Workshop
If you love getting creative, The Devon Wreath Company hosts beautiful festive workshops right here in the village — this year on 5th and 6th December. It’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon, crafting something natural and unique to take home.
Workshops like these are what make our local community so special — relaxed, welcoming and full of creativity.

4. Explore the Beauty of Winter on the Coast and Moor
A crisp winter walk is good for the soul. From the lodge, you can explore the South West Coast Path, or head inland to Dartmoor National Park, where the rugged landscape feels even more magical under winter skies. Don’t forget your camera — and maybe a flask of something warm.

5. Indulge in a Cosy Winter Treat
South Devon knows how to do indulgence well. Pop into a local garden centre for mince pies and coffee — Jack’s Patch in Bishopsteignton is one of our favourites. Or take a drive to The Ness in Shaldon for a festive feast with sea views and twinkling lights over the estuary.

If you fancy a wintry Dartmoor adventure, head to The Old Inn at Widecombe — a quintessential moorland pub with roaring log fires, hearty food and Christmas decorations that make it feel like something from a storybook. The drive across the moors is beautiful at this time of year, especially in the early evening light.
6. Find Stillness and Space to Breathe
Among all the festive bustle, it’s easy to forget the quiet side of Christmas — time to rest, reflect and reconnect.
At Three Tree Lodge, you can unwind in your wood-fired hot tub under the stars, cosy up by the log burner, and enjoy the calm of nature all around you. Whether you’re celebrating, retreating, or simply recharging, there’s no better time to slow down and savour the season.
However you spend the season, we hope you find a moment to pause, breathe, and savour the simple joys of winter. If you’re dreaming of a quiet Christmas or New Year getaway, take a look at our winter availability or join our mailing list for exclusive seasonal updates.
Wishing you warmth and calm from all of us at Three Tree Lodge.
